BLA Supports Girls Lacrosse at BHS (Pembroke, Bermuda) January 29, 2008 Students at The Bermuda High School for Girls have formed their own lacrosse club under the direction of Julie Clements. Michael McDonnell and Michael Totman, members of the Bermuda Lacrosse Association, were on hand at the first practice to help support the new club by donating a goal for the girls to use. Julie Clements is a former women’s club lacrosse player at Ohio State University. She brings her extensive experience to BHS as the lacrosse coach. The Bermuda Lacrosse Association is an Affiliate Member of the International Lacrosse Federation and supports the development of lacrosse in Bermuda. The girls, aged 10 and 11, held their first practice on Wednesday, January 16, 2008. There was a great turnout and the girls were excited to play this new sport. They worked on basic skills such as picking up ground balls, cradling, and shooting. Michael Totman, President of the Bermuda Lacrosse Association, commented: “We’re excited that a new lacrosse group has started on the island, and the fact that it’s a school club should help develop Bermuda’s next generation of lacrosse athletes. Julie has a passion for the sport and she’s bringing that to her players. We hope more programs develop across the island and of course we will do all we can to support them.” Through generous donations from sponsors such as The Bermuda Department of Tourism, Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd., Allied World Assurance Company Ltd., Island Construction, and OnionTV, the BLA is able to continue to develop the sport of lacrosse in Bermuda. In July a group of Bermuda student athletes will travel to Canada to participate in the ILF boys under 19 World Championships.
